After some basic instructions on CAD modelling, students often feel overly exposed to the computer’s abilities and automatisms and tend to forget about the huge benefits CAD can deliver. A supplementary course intended to change this reluctant attitude towards CAD. A detailed tutorial on modelling a common consumer product gave a good basis to motivate students to practice freeform modelling. But most importantly, lectures on some basic topics related to freeform provided profound knowledge on a more strategic and abstract level. Having received excellent feedback from the students, the course was soon integrated in the mandatory curriculum of the industrial design programme.
